Well it’s really going to happen. On August 26th in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather one of the best boxers of this generation who is 49-0 and has been a Champion almost continuously since he destroyed Genaro Hernandez in 1998 will be fight Conor McGregor, who as a boxer is 0-0. Conor of course is an accomplished MMA fighter, who though not dominant in his sport at 21-3 is a pretty good self-promoter himself and talked his way into this fight.
Bobby Wallace a Veteran of 27 amateur fights and a trainer at Head Strong Gym thinks Conor has a slim to none chance. Most boxers and those who know and love sport feel the same way. The consensus is that Conor who is supposed to have a big punch, gained that reputation with the small gloves they use in MMA, his supporters also think that since he is somewhat bigger and awkward, that he will show Floyd some things he has not seen before.
Today in the Gym Bobby demonstrated some of the tactics Floyd would use on Conor and how he will expose him. One of the thoughts that has occurred to me as I watched the circus/build up is that many people, mostly casual boxing fans or MMA/UFC fans fail to realize is that many elite boxers have tried to do what McGregor wants to do. Ok so let’s look at a partial list of some of the fighters who tried and failed; Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Marcos Maidana and Manny Pacquiao. You should be impressed, as most of them will end up in the Hall of Fame.
Some say “anything can happen” well, that’s true enough. I could hit the lottery, or a meteor can hit my house tonight. But it is not likely.
This fight is not fight, it’s an event. McGregor has no business being in the ring with Floyd and I think he is hoping only for a moral victory, a flash knockdown, a cut or going the distance. His fans will take anything they get and no matter what happens he walks away a very rich man and Floyd gets even richer.
Will I watch the fight? Sure I will, as long as it lasts. How do I think it will go? Go to youtube and check out the Mayweather Vs. Corrales fight, it will be like that or worse.
